Update on On-Campus Visits

At this time, Cornell is not offering formal campus tours or in-person information sessions. To make the most of your visit, we encourage you to explore our publications and engage with us virtually.

Importantly, Cornell University does not track demonstrated interest. Visiting campus is neither required nor expected of applicants. Students can articulate their fit and interest in the College of Engineering through the Cornell-specific supplemental essays in their application.

Cornells Ithaca campus is open to visitors; however, certain public health restrictions remain in place. As of July 30, 2021, all faculty, staff, students, and visitors are required to wear a mask and physically distance when indoors regardless of vaccination status. We regret that due to campus COVID-19 restrictions, we are unable to welcome visitors into our classrooms at this time. Visitor Relations will continue to offer both recorded and virtual live-streamed campus tours.

    Individuals with a high school diploma or GED who have earned fewer than 12 college credits may apply as a first-year applicant.

    International applicants are defined as students who are not U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, do not have refugee/asylee status, or who are undocumented residents without DACA status.

    Students who have earned over 12 credits at another accredited college or university since graduating from high school should apply as transfer applicants.

    Step 1: Analyze Your Primary Reason for Transferring

    Most transfer students change schools due to three types of variables: social, geographic and academic.

    Social variables can include disliking your roommates, having trouble making friends, embarrassing yourself at a party, etc. If this sounds like you, I encourage you to think about how the environment at a new school will impact these variables.

    This is important to analyze because it will help explain your rationale to a new target school.

    Bear in mind that if your primary reason for transferring colleges is a social factor, many of these factors persist on other college campuses…

    You cannot escape peer pressure or drugs, for instance – they are elements of virtually every college experience. However , if you are currently at a small school and don’t get along with your peers, then moving to a big school may very well help you find a better circle of friends.

    Geographic and academic reasons for transferring are much more straightforward.

    Step 2: Maintain a GPA at or above the Average Transfer GPA of your Target Institution

    Your current college GPA is going to largely dictate the colleges you can consider transferring to. You should be focused on elevating this as much as possible.

    HACK: Consider taking a few easier classes or professors to give your GPA a boost – future colleges won’t know the difficulty of each class or professor, they’ll just be looking at the overall picture.

    Also, make sure your current GPA aligns with the average transfer GPA at a college.

    Transfer to Cornell Engineering

    Fall 2010: (classes i am registered for) Calc III University Physics I Engineering Graphics Engineering Computing II Intro to Literature (ENG 105) US History Total 21 credits

    When I applied to transfer I really wanted MIT with Stanford as a close second. There were a few other colleges and I applied to Cornell on a whim. I had no idea about the reputation and wrote my essay without really caring about how the reader would interpret it.

    Good luck man, dont get discouraged and also remember that there are a lot of colleges with excellent engineering programs. Some of them might fit you better than Cornell…

    Its possible the transfer admit percentage may vary somewhat from year to year; I noticed a considerable variation at some schools D2 was interested in, some time ago.

    If you are considering ECE from Cornell, I would say itll be a pretty difficult decision. Unless you are willing to transfer in as a sophomore since you dont have a lot of core classes that ECE needs.

    How to transfer to Cornell Engineering

    If you’re at a top 50 school, worry less about transferring and more about doing well and going to a good graduate school in 4 years’ time. Grad schools would rather have an A student from (insert top 40/50 school here) than a B student from Stanford.

    The requirements page say successful applicants do intro to circuits or some sophomore course as such. But due to the way the courses are structured here in my uni, I’m able to take only 15 credits in the first semester and 18 in the next. (18 max). Since I didn’t take AP, I won’t be able to take the sophomore courses.

    How come they ask for us to send the scores then?
