University highlights
Murdoch University is one of the top Public universities in Murdoch, Australia. It is ranked #581-590 in QS Global World Rankings 2022.
History[edit]
In 1962, the Government of Western Australia earmarked an area of land in Bull Creek to be the site of a future, second state university. Integral to the planning of the creation of Western Australias second university was the planning for the School of Veterinary Science, which was to be the first professional faculty of the new university.[7]
It was decided that the new university would be named after Sir Walter Murdoch, a prominent local author, philosopher, and an Emeritus Professor at the University of Western Australia. When asked if he minded a new university in Western Australia being named in his honour, he was quoted as saying, “No, but it had better be a good one.”[7]
Murdoch University was formally constituted on 25 July 1973. It was opened with an inauguration ceremony on 17 September 1974. This date was chosen as it was Sir Walter Murdochs 100th birthday. The Governor-General of Australia, Sir John Kerr, attended the ceremony as the guest of honour. Lectures began in 1975, with 510 students initially enrolled for undergraduate programs.[7]
At the time, the young university was notable for its admissions policy of taking into consideration eligibility factors other than the school leaving exam results of students. Other universities later came to adopt this more holistic perspective of student eligibility for entrance into university education.[7]
Since 2015, Murdoch University has become more teaching focused. In late 2018, the University faced scandal subsequent to an enrolment surge of international students, many said to be “lacking English language and computing skills”. In 2019, a Four Corners investigation by the ABC found further denigration of standards with allegations of foreign students being recruited as “cash cows”.[8]
In May 2021, the University unveiled a new brand, replacing the traditional banksia logo with a simplified “MU” logo intended to be “modern and future-focused”,[9] as well as signifying the Universitys commitment to being a “progressive”, “free thinking” university.[10]
Campuses[edit]
Murdoch University has three Australian campuses: South Street Campus, Rockingham Campus, and Mandurah Campus.

Our Research Institutes
Murdoch University is a member of the Innovative Research Universities group of Australia, a network of comprehensive universities conducting research of national and international standing.
Our research on the nexus between human, animal and environmental health is providing a roadmap for addressing complex and unique global challenges with institutes dedicated to each of these areas.
Health Futures Institute
As global populations increase and age, and the climate changes, a holistic focus on the interface between human, animal and environmental health is needed.
The Health Futures Institute, located next to one of the most technologically advanced private and publicly-funded hospital precincts in the southern hemisphere, provides a unique research space to deliver this.
The Institute focuses on clearly defined health-related research areas and pursues those in partnership with local healthcare providers, community groups and international collaborators.
Food Futures Institute
Food security is one of the primary challenges of our generation. As one of the most agriculturally-focused universities in Australia, scientists and policy experts at the Food Futures Institute are working to improve the accessibility and availability of sufficient, safe, sustainably-produced and nutritious food.
The Institute leads research on the sustainable use of the world’s limited land and water resources to produce food, addressing challenges across the full value chain of primary food production.
Researchers are focused on improving the quality and yield of agricultural products by applying innovative science with sound ecological principles, which are economically viable, humane and meet the highest ethical standards.
Harry Butler Institute
Harry Butler was a pioneer who engineered a means for business and biodiversity to co-exist through effective biosecurity and environmental management. He achieved this through decades of service to Western Australia’s natural environment – and through the Harry Butler Institute, we continue his work in this field.
As experts in sustainable development, the Institute enables industry to deliver maximum economic value to the community, while simultaneously safeguarding the environment.
The breadth of research programs, ranging from aquatic biology and ecology to biosecurity and climate change adaptation, ensure the continuation of Harry Butler’s outstanding environmental outcomes, based on excellence in both scientific research and industry practice.
