FRESHMEN ADMISSION
Admission to SUNY New Paltz is very competitive.
SUNY New Paltz typically receives in excess of 14,000 applications for a freshman class of 1,150.
GENERAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
We review all general admission applications based on four components:
SUNY New Paltz is SAT/ACT optional for the Spring 2022 and Fall 2022 semesters (unless applying to an accelerated medical program).
Unfortunately, given the large number of applications, SUNY New Paltz does not honor requests for individual interviews.

Our review of an applicants academic work will be by academic year so that we can get a clear, year-by-year picture of achievement and motivation throughout the course of the applicants high school career.
Weighted high school averages: As so many high schools use weighted averages, we will recalculate the overall average in accordance with the high school profile. We use only the five core subjects when recalculating the average.
The middle 50% high school averages of our accepted freshmen: 90.0 – 95.0
SUNY New Paltz will be test optional for the students applying to the spring 2021, fall 2021 and the spring 2022 start terms. Application review will focus on the strength of the high school coursework taken, the grades achieved in academic course work, letters of recommendation, the extracurricular activities, as well as the structure and quality of the student essay.
Important note: Students applying for the accelerated 3+4 Osteopathic Medical Programs, and the accelerated 3+4 Optometry Medical Programs, will be required to submit either the SAT or the ACT test scores for admission consideration into these programs.
Any student that has taken the SAT or ACT test, and wishes to have their scores considered during our holistic review process should notify the Office of Undergraduate Admission by email. We will only be able to consider the tests scores in our review process if we have received advanced notification from the student. This notification should be sent at the same time that the student submits their application.

Decisions are sent via U.S. Mail by the first week of January.
